The Lion King: Take in Dinner & a Show at the Sofia
One of the most feted and talked-about musicals of recent Broadway history is currently wowing audiences over at the San Diego Civic Theatre: The Lion King. This unforgettable production runs through October 2.
As a guest of ours at the Sofia Hotel, you’re literally a couple of blocks away from this long-running gem of a performance space, which puts the saga of Simba right at your fingertips! Take it from us: There’s nothing like a night on the town anchored by a Civic Theatre production—and a pre-show meal at Currant American Brasserie, to boot!
A Modern Classic
Debuting on Broadway only three years after the release of the hit Disney movie that inspired it, The Lion King—which tells the coming-of-age story of the lion cub Simba—earned rave reviews right from the start. Stunning costumes, elaborate puppetry, and lithe human grace bring the beasts of the African savanna to astonishing life on stage, all to the tune of some fabulous music: “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” and others (many penned by Elton John and Tim Rice).
Directed by Julie Taymor and choreographed by Garth Fagan, The Lion King won six Tony® Awards—“Best Musical” among them—and ranks as Broadway’s highest-grossing show ever. It’s also among the longest-running.
Make It a Double-Header
Catching The Lion King at the San Diego Civic Theatre makes for one fabulous night out in downtown San Diego. And you can put the cherry on top, so to speak, with a pre-show dinner at the Sofia’s very own Currant American Brasserie!
The restaurant’s lovely ambience, its French-inspired menu, and its ever-warm, ever-welcoming service all set the tone for the perfect evening. Your taste buds, meanwhile, will still be thanking you even as you take your seats for the show.
You’re within a few minutes’ walk of the Civic Theatre at the Sofia, so you can enjoy a completely relaxed meal at Currant and then a short-and-sweet walk home after The Lion King. Check the schedule and get your tickets over at the Civic Theatre website, and we’ll look forward to hosting you!
