Sand Castles In San Diego: U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Expo

Sand Castle U.S. Sand Sculpting ChallengeLabor Day weekend sees another installment of one of San Diego’s most unique annual events: the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exhibition. The marvelous bayside fun all goes down a stone’s throw from the Sofia!

From 9 a.m. on Friday, August 30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 2, some of the planet’s finest sand sculptors descend on the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal Pier and do what they do best. Some 300 tons of sand are trucked in for the proceedings, which are memorably set between the ship-cruised waters of San Diego Bay and the city’s glorious downtown skyline.

Sand Masterworks

You’ll be dazzled by the artistry and creativity displayed during the competition as you observe international masters of the craft render astonishing sculptures from innumerable quartz grains.

This year’s contestants—many of which are returning to the site of past triumphs—include such leading lights as Quebec’s Melineige Beauregard, Ireland’s Fergus Mulvany, and Italy’s Michela Ciappini. Also participating are some superb representatives of the Golden State, including Stinson Beach’s Kirk Rademaker and Carmel’s Rusty Croft.

In addition to the overall competition, which ends Sunday afternoon, there’ll be a head-to-head matchup between two topnotch teams of sculptors.

Other Activities

Along with the stunning sand sculptures, there are plenty of other attractions. Artists who specialize in other media—from wood and metal to glass and jewelry—will be displaying their work as well, while musicians, jugglers, stilt-walkers, and other performers enliven the whole weekend. Kids can occupy themselves in a sandbox just for them. You’ll have a suite of gourmet food and beverage options on site.

People’s Choice Awards for both the sand sculptures and “permanent media” give you the chance to get involved and cast a vote for your favorite creations.

Staying at the Sofia is immensely convenient for enjoying the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exhibition.

So come check out the sand masterpieces and all the other artwork and entertainment down by the bay! What better way to celebrate late summer in San Diego?
