Labor Day: Spend Those Last Days of Summer In San Diego!

Sad to say, but the weeks of summer are on the wane. That doesn’t mean, that you can’t make the most of this final stretch of summery spirit! San Diego’s the ideal place to soak up the late-summer sun.

There’s still a delightfully jampacked calendar here in town, and the Sofia Hotel would be proud to serve as your end-of-summer headquarters as you take advantage of the happenings!

Labor Day Fun

Some of the summer’s showstopper events come right at the tail end! For example, some of the globe’s most accomplished and creative sand sculptors will be beelining for the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal Pier for the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition. The beachfront artisans will, as every year, render out of 300 tons of hauled-in quartz grains a bevy of ephemeral masterpieces—a feast for the eyes like you’ve never seen.

If you can tear yourself away from the sand-sculpture wonders, the North Embarcadero will be thronged with gorgeous vessels participating in the Festival of Sail, the very biggest tall-ship extravaganza on the West Coast.

Spectacle of a different variety unfolds Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings with the “Summer Pops” concert series grand finale, held in Embarcadero Marina Park South. Fireworks and cannon fire over San Diego Bay will add the oomph to Tschaikovsky’s 1812 Overture—you can’t miss it!

A half-hour east of the Sofia in Lakeside, California, meanwhile, the Barona Band of Mission Indians will be throwing a humdinger of a powwow from September 4 through 6. It’ll be the 45th run-through of this popular event, which celebrates a part of greater San Diego’s indigenous heritage with plenty of competitive dancing and drumming.

Other Ways to Mark the End of Summer

Such grand events are only part of the appeal of summer’s wind-down in San Diego. Whether you’re kayaking, surfing, or standup paddleboarding at La Jolla, biking the Coronado waterfront, hiking at Torrey Pines, or weaving between downtown’s world-class restaurants and breweries, there’s just no end to the fun you can be having in America’s Finest City.

So reserve yourself a splendid guestroom at the Sofia Hotel and make the most of summer’s final act!
