Honor and Celebrate Fleet Week In America's Finest City
It’s time to showcase our gratitude for the men and women of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard in the 2013 installment of Fleet Week San Diego!
This year’s festivities run from September 13 through October 6. From golf to astonishing aerobatics, Fleet Week San Diego serves as a joyous celebration of our country and its brave servicemen and servicewomen.
The Fleet Week Tradition
San Diego, with its venerable military tradition, hosted the first Fleet Week way back in 1935, in conjunction with the California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park. Lauded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who addressed the crowd by telephone, this inaugural Fleet Week saw hundreds of warships and aircraft congregate in the city.
2013 Fleet Week Events
The popular Fleet Week All Enlisted Golf Tournament helps kick off the proceedings on the 13th, providing enlisted Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, and Marines the chance to tee off in a fun, action-packed competition.
On Wednesday, September 18, the Fleet Week Foundation/SDMAC (San Diego Military Advisory Council) Breakfast brings San Diego civic and military leaders together. The next day’s activities include the Fleet Week Enlisted Recognition Luncheon and the fabulous parade of the Coronado Village Car Procession.
On September 21 and 22, the Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival provides the exhilarating spectacle of lightning-fast racecars squaring off on the Naval Air Station North Island runway. This rare opportunity to visit Naval Base Coronado serves up thrills aplenty—all in honor of the U.S. military and the heroes in its ranks.
A race of a different kind falls on Saturday, September 28: the MCRD Boot Camp Challenge. Ever wonder what it’s like to try out for the Marines? This three-mile obstacle race, held at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, puts you through the paces.
In addition to the Fleet Week Football Classic, the final three days of Fleet Week San Diego culminate with the famous MCAS Miramar Air Show. From October 4 through 6, you’ll be able to gape at the aerial choreography of highly trained pilots in sleek, spectacular military jets.
