From Sgt. Pepper to Chaka Khan: Take in the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights

From Sgt. Pepper to Chaka Khan: Take in the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights

Join us in Downtown San Diego at the Sofia Hotel this summer, and you’ll have an absolute plethora of live music and other performances to enjoy alongside our historic boutique luxury accommodations.

We’ll preview some of the other concerts still in store for San Diego this summer in a later blogpost, but today we’re going to narrow our focus to one of the reliably awesome musical traditions of the season: the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights.

From classical masterpieces to rock-‘n-roll, there’s still plenty on tap for the 2019 Bayside Summer Nights program, which is presenting its most packed calendar yet at the Embarcadero Marine Park South only about a mile away from the Sofia on the Downtown waterfront.

Upcoming Shows at Bayside Summer Nights

Fresh on the heels of the hip-hop artist, producer, and actor Common taking the stage with Steven Reineke and the San Diego Symphony at the end of July, some more big-name performers are joining the Bayside Summer Nights party in August.

On August 3rd, for example, the legendary B-52s will have the crowd dancing with “Love Shack,” “Rock Lobster,” and other indelible hits. There’ll be joined by New Wave icons Berlin, who’ll open the show, and there’ll be some dazzling fireworks as part of the proceedings (as for a number of the shows outlined below).

On August 18th, meanwhile, Blues Traveler will play a mix of the old and the new in support of their latest release, Hurry Up & Hang Around. On August 24th, the Queen of Funk herself pays a visit to Embarcadero South: the one and only Chaka Khan. The next night sees R&B legends The O’Jays join forces with The Commodores.

A musical icon who recently left us will be celebrated on August 8th with A Nancy Wilson Tribute, led by singers Melissa Morgan and Mary Stallings. On August 22nd, the KSDS Jazz Orchestra will present a track-by-track performance of one of the great Miles Davis records with Miles Ahead: Miles Davis + 19 in Concert.

The above shows don’t feature the San Diego Symphony, but rest assured the orchestra has plenty of its own magic in store for the rest of the Bayside Summer Nights lineup. That includes the annual Beethoven by the Bay concert on August 4th, the program of which includes such iconic pieces as the great composer’s Symphony No. 7.

On August 9th and 10th, the San Diego Symphony will pay tribute to perhaps the Fab Four’s most famous album—and one of the most influential milestones in all of popular music—by playing through the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

On August 16th and 17th, the Symphony’s joined by two-time Tony Award nominee Laura Osnes as well as Jason Danieley for Some Enchanted Evening: The Broadway Hits of Rodgers, Hammerstein & Hartget ready to hum along to “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” and “My Favorite Things.” If you need even more musical goodness, get your tickets for the August 23rd Bayside Summer Nights presentation: Singin’ in the Rain in Concert, with Richard Kaufman conducting the San Diego Symphony for a live score.

Bayside Summer Nights’ll have a big finish worthy of another fantastic season with the annual closing blowout: the 1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular, topped off with the 1812 Overture marked by cannons and pyrotechnics.
