Make it a 4th of July for the Books With a San Diego Celebration at the Sofia Hotel
The good old USA turns 242nd years old this July 4th, and as always San Diego will be marking the occasion with a whole lot of razzle-dazzle—some of the razzliest and dazzliest in the nation, in fact. Come experience how America’s Finest City celebrates Independence Day—and treat yourself to the best in Downtown San Diego accommodations at the Sofia Hotel for your holiday getaway!
Here’s an overview of some of the 4th of July highlights you’ll have at your disposal while soaking up the luxury at our historic West Broadway hotel.
The Showstopper: The Big Bay Boom
The crown jewel of San Diego’s 4th of July festivities, the Big Bay Boom outdoes any other fireworks show in Southern California. Come 9 PM on Independence Day, you’ll most definitely want to be ensconced along the San Diego waterfront to see the pyrotechnic plumes that launch from four barges strung along the length of the bay. Some of the best viewing can be had from Seaport Village and the North and South Embarcadero: just a short and carefree stroll from the Sofia Hotel!
The 4th of July, Island-Style: Coronado’s Independence Day Bash
The island of Coronado makes the 4th of July an all-day party. The 43rd annual Independence Day 12K run and 5K run/walk kicks off at Tidelands Park at 7 AM, while an hour later Art in the Park gets underway at Spreckels Park. A highlight of Coronado’s patriotic festivities is its annual Independence Day Parade, the 70th edition of which marches with gusto down Orange Avenue from 1st Street to Churchill Place beginning at 10 AM. The Coronado Community Concert Band puts on a show at Spreckels Park at 4 PM, while at 9 PM fireworks erupt over Glorietta Bay.
Turn Back the Clock at the Old Town 4th of July
Another mainstay of Independence Day in San Diego is the 4th of July celebration at the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. It’s a bit of a time capsule of a jamboree with period-costumed celebrants, a parade, live music, and old-timey fun (how’s your cow-chip throw these days? Are you an ace cherry-pit spitter?) which culminates in a rousing pie-eating contest. The Old Town 4th of July shindig is free and goes down from 11 AM to 4 PM.
The San Diego County Fair’s Big Fireworks Finish
The San Diego County Fair has been delighting visitors with handsome livestock, amusement rides, comedy and magic shows, concerts, and of course plentiful quantities of food and drink since early June. The fair (held on the Del Mar Fairgrounds) throws a climactic finish on the 4th of July with a 9 PM fireworks display followed up by a dance party.
