Get A 360 Degree View Of San Diego From Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial

Come pay your respects to our nation’s veterans while reveling in a panoramic view of the sublime San Diego coastline up atop Mount Soledad in La Jolla!

A landmark of the city, the 824-foot hill includes a prominent cross and the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial, where concentrically arranged walls display the names and stories of thousands of service members representing the U.S. Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Air Force, the Coast Guard, and World War II Merchant Marines. The black granite plaques honor heroes going back to the Revolutionary War. The memorial’s the site for regular ceremonies throughout the year, including large-scale affairs marking Memorial Day and Veterans Week.

The prospects from Mount Soledad, meanwhile, offer a remarkable overview of San Diego and its surrounds: Coronado, Downtown, and Mexico to the south, La Jolla Shores below, rolling mountains eastward, and north to Torrey Pines and beyond. It’s the glorious, glinting Pacific Ocean, though, that truly dominates the scenery. There aren’t many spots along the San Diego coast that afford such a sweeping, all-encompassing panorama.

The hilltop benches provide the perfect spot for soaking up the gorgeous setting, while easy paths showcase the beauty of the coastal chaparral.

Besides the Veterans Memorial (first dedicated in 1952 as a Korean War monument) and the stirring scenery, Mount Soledad serves up some heady history: Charles and Anne Lindbergh flew gliders here, and the summit linked into San Diego’s early-warning defense system during the Second World War.

Mount Soledad’s one of those special sites cherished by San Diego natives and visitors alike. The next time you’re staying with us here at the Sofia Hotel, make the easy trip north to this oceanside vantage to pay tribute to American veterans and drink in the 360-degree perspective!
