Spring Break in San Diego!

Carlsbad Flower Fields

Ample quantities of Southern Californian sunshine, a swoony Pacific seacoast, oodles of festivals and sporting attractions: Spring break doesn’t get any better than in San Diego!

Let us treat you to sumptuous Downtown San Diego hospitality here at the Sofia, and use our centrally situated hotel to soak up the season! Here are a few ideas for vernal fun in and around America’s Finest City…

Catch Some Baseball

It’s that “take me out to the ballgame” time of year again, and the San Diego Padres are holding court over at Petco Park just a short jaunt south of us here at the Sofia. There’s nothing like live baseball, and the Padres’ stadium is a real winner.

The Padres’ April homestands see the team going inning-for-inning against the Colorado Rockies (Monday, April 2nd through Thursday, April 5th); the San Francisco Giants (Thursday, April 12th through Sunday, April 15th); the LA Dodgers (Monday, April 16th through Wednesday, April 18th); and the New York Mets (Friday, April 27th through Sunday, April 29th).

Nab your tickets and survey the full Padres schedule right here!

Hit Up the Beach

Nothing says spring break like some quality time logged at the beach, right? San Diego treats its visitors to a plethora of beautiful Pacific sand-and-surf destinations, including some fine examples just a hop, skip, and a jump from the doorstep of the Sofia Hotel. For instance, consider a daytrip over to Mission Beach or Coronado Beach, or head up-coast to the renowned strands of La Jolla Cove and Torrey Pines.

Besides lounging, you might consider a cruise on a stand-up paddleboard or kayak along one of these lovely San Diego beaches. And this is also the time of year to experience one of our region’s trademark natural spectacles: the annual after-hours spawning run of the California grunion! Watching these little buggers wriggle ashore in moonlit swash to forge the next generation in the sand is National Geographic-style entertainment: Keep tabs on the forecast timing over at the California Department of Fish & Wildlife website.

Garden-Hopping & Floral Festivities

Given San Diego’s easygoing climate, there are botanical attractions year-round in the region’s gardenscapes and countryside alike, but no question spring’s a great time to stop and smell the flowers around town. Balboa Park boasts more than a dozen mesmerizing gardens, from the Japanese Friendship Garden (with its cherry and magnolia blossoms) to the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden, the floral show of which tends to peak in April and May.

This is also prime time for visiting the multicolored paradise of the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, given the famous, weekslong bloom of 50-plus acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus: a sight to behold, to put it mildly.

Then there’s the long-running (and fabulously fragrant) Coronado Flower Show, this year’s edition of which—cheerily themed “Let the Good Times Grow!”—takes place April 21st and April 22nd at Spreckels Park.

April 26th through 29th, meanwhile, the San Diego Museum of Art once again hosts its popular Art Alive festival, which sees more than 100 floral evocations of iconic pieces of art in celebration of the season.
