EarthFair 2014: The Largest Free Annual Environmental Fair In The World

Who’s ready to celebrate our big, beautiful, precious, and fragile Mother Earth?

San Diego boasts the world’s biggest free yearly environmental fair, and if you’re staying at the Sofia Hotel in late April you’ll have the chance to attend. On Sunday, April 27, EarthFair 2014—put on as usual by the non-profit group San Diego EarthWorks—will teach children and adults about sustainable technology, recycling, ecotourism, and all sorts of other planet-friendly topics.

This is EarthFair’s 25th go-round. The action goes down from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Balboa Park, just a few miles northeast of the Sofia.

An Impressive Event

Some 400 volunteers are helping make EarthFair 2014 happen. More than 300 different exhibitors are taking part, and—if past iterations are any indication—about 60,000 visitors will check out the proceedings. Given it’s all in the service of the biosphere, those are pretty encouraging—and impressive—statistics!

This year’s exhibitors include the Academy of Arts and Sciences, the California Wolf Center, Plant With Purpose, Food For Life San Diego, the Sweetwater Zen Center, and the Self-Heal School of Herbal Studies and Healing.

You’ll be able to check out green technology for the domestic space at the eHome exhibit, alternative-fuel vehicles at the Cleaner Car Concourse, and environmentally themed artwork at the eARTh Gallery. Musicians and storytellers will be enlivening no fewer than five stages, including the Children’s Stage, all day long.

Speaking of kids, EarthFair 2014’s Children’s Activity Area has loads of fun hands-on activities and entertainment for the younger crowd—including primers on paper-making, recycling, and low-impact wilderness exploration. At 10:30, the Children’s Earth Parade kicks off, with participants encouraged to costume themselves as their favorite endangered species.

Meanwhile, you can satisfy your appetite with the delectable vegetarian fare at the Food Pavilion—a far cry from the low-grade junk food you might be accustomed to at typical outdoor events.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Sofia

If you’re rooming at the Sofia Hotel this month, you’ll have no trouble moseying over to EarthFair 2014—magnificent Balboa Park is an easy commute. It also makes for a wonderful venue for paying tribute to this planet we all call home!
